About
Having recently celebrated our 90th birthday, we’re proud of our history and tradition of doing funny, weird, and generally outrageous things. A Saturday in 1921 saw hundreds of students sitting around on pavements despite unimpressed policemen, playing card and board games and just chatting – all as part of the “Cambridge University Pavement Club”. Soon after the discovery of the Tutankhamun tomb in 1922, our very own public toilets under Market Square were transformed into the tomb itself. Crowds were treated to dressed up students emerging with the University College London mascot – Phineas – normally chained up on Tottenham Court Road but “borrowed” for the occasion.
Although more recently, our efforts have been focused more on raising money for charity, we’ve not completely forgotten about our history of publicity stunts, with giant 24 hour papier-mâché egg and spoon races around Parker’s Piece and bed races (after fixing wheels to your bed, obviously!) to the city center all the way from Girton, wherever that is. As recently as last term, hundreds of bike owners received free balloons as we advertised our new event, Lost, around town.
We’re always on the lookout for funny, weird, and generally outrageous things to do so if you have an idea for something we could do, let us know!
